HIQA attends Joint Committee on Disability Matters

On 8 November, our Chief Inspector, Carol Grogan, and Deputy Chief Inspector with responsibility for services for people with disabilities, Finbarr Colfer, attended the Oireachtas to discuss rights-based care for children with disabilities.

Overview of monitoring and inspecting Ireland’s children’s services during 2022

2022 was another challenging year for many children’s services across the country, according to our annual overview report of the inspection and regulation of children’s services.

We conducted 54 inspections throughout the year, and found improved levels of compliance against national standards and regulations in children’s services. However, areas requiring further improvements were also identified.

HIQA celebrates Pride

Supporting diversity and inclusion is important to us, both within Ireland’s health and social care services and for our own staff.

During the summer, with thanks to our Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, HIQA celebrated Pride and we were represented in the Dublin, Cork and Galway Pride parades, showing our support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Message from our CEO

Welcome to our newsletter.

Promoting a rights-based approach and ensuring that the voices of service users are heard, are core values for HIQA.  The role of advocacy is central to the delivery of these values and it is for this reason that advocacy is to the forefront of this Spring edition of our newsletter.

Rights Based Care – Embedding a human rights-based approach into everyday care and support

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms all people should enjoy and are protected under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in the European Convention on Human Rights.

Promoting and protecting equality and human rights of people using health and social care services is integral to HIQA’s work. We believe it is essential that all people using health and social care services are protected and that their human rights are upheld.
