Over the past month, we have been distributing our recently published Guidance on a Human Rights-based Approach in Health and Social Care Services and the National Standards for Adult Safeguarding to a wide range of health and social care services.

Our Health Information Quality Team met with colleagues in the Health Research Board (HRB) in January 2019 to discuss how the HRB has applied HIQA’s health information guidance material to improve the quality of the data and information they collect in their national health systems.

Welcome to the latest edition of HIQA News. I am pleased to introduce you to Dr Pat O’Mahony, who was appointed as the new Chairperson of our Board this month.

With his depth of governance, regulatory and health-related expertise, Dr O’Mahony’s appointment will be hugely beneficial to the future strategic direction and success of HIQA and comes at a key time when we are developing a new three-year corporate plan. We welcome the guidance and experience that Dr O’Mahony will bring to HIQA as our remit continues to expand.

This week we have also commenced a public consultation on our draft Corporate Plan for 2019–2021. 

National Standards for infection prevention and control in community services

Standards Lead Judy Gannon (pictured above) presented a poster on the National Standards for infection prevention and control in community services at the 3rd Annual National Quality, Clinical Risk and Patient Safety conference on 21 September.

HIQA published National Standards for infection prevention and control in community services on 19 September 2018. This is the first time we have developed standards specifically for community health and social care services, including ambulance services, homecare, GP practices, dental practices, residential centres, day care services and pharmacies.

2018 National Patient Experience Survey Programme

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2018 National Patient Experience Survey, and those who encouraged and helped patients to take part. Over 27,500 people were invited to tell us about their hospital experience in this year’s survey.
