Good infection prevention and control practices and antimicrobial stewardship are essential in all health and social care settings to prevent healthcare-associated infections and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
This month, HIQA is commencing a new inspection programme to drive improvements in infection prevention and control in designated centres for older people and people with a disability.
We have submitted recommendations to the Department of Health to tackle antimicrobial resistance in Ireland’s health system.
The recommendations, outlined in a submission to inform the second National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance 2021-2025, highlight the need to put a targeted focus on vulnerable populations, address gaps in the infrastructure of services, and advance eHealth and clinical pharmacy services.

From the onset of this public health emergency, HIQA has endeavoured to make an effective contribution to the protection of people living in and using health and social care services, as well as informing evidence-based decision-making.
We have developed an assurance framework to support registered providers of social care services and their key senior managers in ensuring effective infection prevention and control practices are in place.
Since August 2020, over 8,000 people have completed our online learning module to support the implementation of the National Standards for infection prevention and control in community services.

HIQA’s Infection Prevention and Control Hub continues to provide advice and support to providers and staff of nursing homes, residential centres for people with a disability, special care units and Tusla children’s residential settings.
