In December 2020, HIQA’s Health Economist Paul Carty was selected as a member of the Healthy Economies Committee of the 2021 European Health Parliament, a movement to connect and empower the next generation of European health leaders.
This is the 6th annual European Health Parliament.
The Healthy Economies Committee aims to develop European-level actionable evidence-based policy recommendations to promote economic recovery and ensure longer term health system resilience and economic sustainability. The policy recommendations will be published in June 2021.
Paul Carty said: “The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has touched all of our lives. Many of us have been forced to rapidly adapt to remote working environments, suffered financially and psychologically from the imposition of public health restrictions and endured the hardships of illness and death. Collectively, we have responded to this crisis through a shared sense of responsibility, duty to look after one another and the championing of scientific innovation that has led to the development of therapies and vaccinations at rates never before seen in human history.
“The 2021 European Health Parliament aims to connect the next generation of European leaders and provide the platform on which to rethink European health policies. The objective of the Healthy Economies committee is to find ways to stimulate cross-border economic recovery and identify strategies that enhance the resilience and preparedness of our health systems so that effective and coordinated responses can be swiftly implemented in the face of potential future public health crises. I look forward to contributing to these important policy developments alongside the talented interdisciplinary team that has been assembled.”
