International review of the methodologies for developing national standards and guidance for health and social care services

HIQA has published an international review of how 13 organisations throughout the world develop standards and guidance. These organisations were spread across nine jurisdictions, including Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Europe.

This review has contributed to key changes in how HIQA develops national standards and guidance, which will help improve the understanding and use of national standards and guidance among the public and front-line staff.

This will help bring about improved practice across the system and will ultimately lead to safe, high-quality care and improved outcomes for people using services across Ireland.

The review has also helped inform HIQA’s Corporate Plan 2019–2021 and future plans for developing national standards and guidance for health and social care services. HIQA is very grateful for the assistance of all 13 organisations in completing this review.
