We are revising the Catalogue of National Health and Social Care Data Collections, an overview of the large volume of health information being gathered by national organisations

National health and social care data collections are repositories of routinely collected health and social care data in Ireland, including administrative collections, censuses, national routine surveys, and registries. They are crucial in providing an overview of identified health and social care related issues and services in Ireland.

For example, BreastCheck, the National Breast Screening Register collects data to identify the target population for screening, as well as collecting clinical data on people who have received a screening service.

The catalogue provides information on Ireland’s national health and social care data collections, the information they collect and how to access the data.

Rachel Flynn, our Director of Health Information and Standards, said: “Timely access to relevant and accurate data improves the quality of health and social care by informing decision-making, service planning, policy-making and high-quality research. The Catalogue of National Health and Social Care Data Collections is an important tool in health transparency. It aims to promote, encourage and facilitate the use of this data.”

The catalogue can be used by services providers, people using health and social care services, clinicians and professionals, academic researchers, policy-makers and members of the general public. The catalogue aims to promote the use of these national data collections in order to drive improvements in the quality and safety of health and social care services in Ireland.

The catalogue was last updated in 2017. It can be found on our website here.

As part of this fourth revision, a revised template to collect information has been sent to all national data collections currently featured in the catalogue.

However, we also want to include any new additions or collections in the catalogue.

If your organisation wishes to be added to the revised catalogue, please email us at catalogue@hiqa.ie by 18 February.
